Online-Investing Start-Up Allows Customers to Construct and Share Theme-Based Collections of Stocks With Others
An Industry-First Opportunity for Monetization

San Mateo, CA, Feb. 28, 2013

Motif Investing, the company that pioneered ideas-based stock investing, has taken do-it-yourself investing to the next level. Today the Silicon Valley company is announcing a new class of products allowing individuals, organizations and brands to construct and share their own collections of stocks or exchange-traded funds online—and, soon, make money when other investors buy them.

The just-launched “Build Your Own” feature on the Motif Web site, powered by the proprietary Motif Publishing Platform, is the next iteration of the company’s longstanding mission to empower individuals to invest in, and profit from, real- world trends and ideas in a cost-effective manner.

Since last year, Motif’s customers have been able to purchase pre-built “motifs”– portfolios of stocks, bonds or ETFs linked by common themes such as tablet computing, inflation or home improvement—assembled by Motif’s in-house research team. While investors could customize those motifs to their liking, they did not have the ability to build their own bespoke motifs from scratch until now.

“This innovative BYO program is a game-changer for online investing,” declared Hardeep Walia, Motif’s co-founder and chief executive. “The ability to build your own motifs gives entrepreneurial investors, advisers and others a new, highly visible platform from which they can market their own investment ideas and strategies to a wide audience.”

Individuals, RIAs and Organizations already building new, custom motifs
Motif customers have already taken advantage of the new BYO program. Individual investor Michael Platt recently parlayed his interest in the economies of the Far East into a motif called “Asian Fusion.” This custom motif includes shares of companies based in China, Japan, India, South Korea, Indonesia, Taiwan and the Philippines that derive at least 75% of their revenue from the region. “This is an empowering new way to invest, because I get to create, essentially, my own financial product,” said Platt, CEO, Education Marketing. “I’m excited about the possibilities to create even more custom motifs to diversify my portfolio.”

Tom Nowak, a financial planner, put together a motif called “Socially Responsible” that includes shares of companies that are advocates of the environment, consumer protection, human rights and diversity. Nowak said the new BYO tool would help him align his clients’ investments with their particular worldviews, and also give them the benefits of low-fee investing. “I’m really looking forward to using it more,” he said.

Companies in finance and other industries can also build custom motifs that highlight their brands. A publisher of a market index, for instance, could build a motif around that index, exposing others on the site to that brand in a new and unique way.

All the tools you need, and a catalog for discovery
In building their own motifs, customers have the tools readily available to select listed individual stocks and ETFs and then intuitively adjust weightings for each stock in a motif based on their own investment strategy. They can match their portfolio against the performance of a benchmark index; and then decide the dollar amount they would like to allocate toward the purchase of their customized portfolio of individual stocks.

Later this spring, BYO motifs will be featured on Motif’s site in a catalog akin to an online app store. The catalog will provide intuitive categorization and search functionality to allow visitors to easily discover new motifs. The price to purchase your own BYO motif is $9.95, the same as a traditional motif. Later this spring Motif will begin allowing customers to buy others’ BYO motifs as well; when that happens, the motifs’ creators will be eligible for compensation through a royalty payment.

Investors can build their own motifs based on their own research and ideas, or from information they find via the Motif site.

Investing in securities involves risk. Customers who invest in motifs are responsible for making their own investment decisions, and may lose some or all of the money they invest. An investment in individual stocks, or a collection of stocks focused on a particular theme or idea, such as a motif, may be subject to a greater risk of price fluctuation as compared to a more diversified portfolio of investments, because adverse developments affecting the particular industry or sector in which you are concentrated could adversely affect your entire investment.
