After you sell securities, it takes two business days from the trade date for the funds to be available to withdraw. This settlement period is commonly referred to as “T+2” which stands for trade date plus two business days and is the industry standard.
Additionally, the standard hold period on new deposits still applies, see “How soon can I withdraw deposited funds?” for more information.
Our clearing partner, Pershing LLC expects their tax documents to be released in four distinct phases.
January 31, 2017 Form 1099 will be available online for accounts with holdings and income that typically do not require reclassification or additional information from issuers. Generally, this includes accounts holding fixed income (debt), equity-only investments and options.
February 15, 2017 Generally, this document includes mutual funds, certain unit investment trusts (UITs), real estate investment trusts (REITs) and certain equities that were not included in the phase one. If you hold positions for which issuers have not provided final 2016 tax information, you will receive a Pending 1099 Notice. This will identify the holdings impacting the mailing date of your Form 1099 and provide the anticipated mail date. If you received your Form 1099, you will not be sent this notice.
February 28, 2017 Form 1099 will be available for accounts for which income reclassifications were received after the February 15 mailing was prepared. Generally, this includes remaining mutual funds, REITs and certain equities.
March 15, 2017 Form 1099 will be available for all remaining accounts regardless of whether pending income reclassifications have been received from issuers. Generally, this includes certain complex, non-equity securities, such as real estate mortgage investment conduits (REMICs), widely held fixed investment trusts (WHFITs) and some UITs.
Please keep in mind you will not receive a Form 1099 if you did not have any reportable sales activity and the interest or dividend payments do not exceed $10 in 2016.
1099s can be found on your Motif dashboard under “Account”, “Documents & Confirms”, and within the “Tax Documents” tab.
For your convenience 1099 data can be downloaded to the latest version of TurboTax within two weeks after distribution.
- From TurboTax, select “Motif Investing, Inc.” as your brokerage and click the continue button.
- Enter your Motif Investing username and password.
If you are unable to log into your account after more than three attempts, we lock the account for your protection and you must contact customer service to unlock it.
We recommend that you click “Recover it now” underneath the blue login button if you are unable to log into your account after up to three attempts. A reset-password link will be emailed to you. For your security, this link expires in 24 hours. If your account is locked for any other reason, please contact customer service.
How do I participate?
Navigate to the invitation page and invite your friends via email, a social platform of your choice, or copying and pasting your personal referral link and sending it to your friend.
What does my friend need to do?
Your friend must click on your unique invite and open a Motif Investing non-retirement account. Once your friend’s application is approved, both of you will each earn free Motif BLUE subscriptions. Your friend will receive three free months of Motif BLUE Unlimited. And you will receive one free month of Motif BLUE Unlimited for each friend that signs up.
When will I get my bonus?
Once your friend’s application is approved, you and your friend will both get automatically get the free Motif BLUE subscription award. We will send you an email informing you of the award.

Funds can be withdrawn the same three ways you deposited them: ACH, Wire or Check.
If withdrawing by ACH, from your Motif dashboard go to “Account” and select “Transfer Money”. On the “Online Transfer (ACH)” page click the “Withdraw Funds” tab and then complete the form.
If you need to withdraw via check or wire please call our Customer Service team at 1-855-586-6843. Check requests are processed within one business day. All hold times still apply (see FAQ “How long does it take for funds to clear for trading?”).
If you would like to close your account, please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We can only close an account with $0 balance, so please make sure all funds are withdrawn before the request is submitted.
After account closure, an incremental dividend or interest may be applied to your account. Any incremental dividend or interest will automatically be paid out using ACH, if on file, or by check.

Confirms are available online for 1 year, statements for 2 years and tax documents for 5 years.
You can access these documents by going to “Account” and selecting “Documents & Confirms”.

Check your email spam folder for any Motif Investing emails, and make sure that you have email@example.com and firstname.lastname@example.org in your address book.
With Motif, you always control how much you want to share and what others can see on your profile. Simply review the privacy settings, and customize them to your preferences and comfort level.
To view your privacy settings, from your Motif dashboard scroll over your name at the top of the page and select “Settings” from the drop-down. From the Account Settings screen, click “Privacy”, and apply the privacy settings to customize what you want to share, and with whom. You can share with all other Motif members, your friends, or your Investing Circle. You should periodically review your privacy settings, adjust them to meet your needs and ensure they remain current and accurate.
While there are may be many reasons to connect your Motif account with Facebook, it’s always your choice. When you link the two, you can easily build your investing circle and share your investing activity with people you trust. Of course, if you choose not to connect your account with Facebook, you can still participate in discussions on our site.
When you connect your Motif account with Facebook, you’ll be able to see which of your Facebook friends are already part of the Motif Social Network. Then, you can invite as many of them as you choose to join your investing circle. You will also be able to see your Facebook picture with any comments you post on Motif. You can adjust your privacy settings, and your sharing choices at any time.
If you choose to link your Motif account with Facebook, you give us your permission to use your picture to create your profile on the Motif Social Network, so that your friends can easily identify you. You also allow us to access your friends list to make it simple for you to connect with your Facebook friends on Motif.
The gain/loss is simply the difference between what you paid and the current market value. If you have sold some of your positions in a given motif, the cost of those positions is deducted from the cost used to calculate your current gain/ loss.
Trading Alerts are designed to inform you whenever a motif you own reaches a specific value.
On pages that are relevant to your account, such as positions and trading, you will see a dropdown near the top of the page which shows which account you are viewing. If you would like to view a different account click on this box and choose the account you would like to view.
You can see all of your linked accounts on the same page on your Accounts Summary and Orders page.
Access your Accounts Summary by scrolling over “Account”, clicking on “Positions & Balances”, then clicking on the tab titled “Accounts Summary”.
Access your Orders Page by scrolling over “Account” and then clicking on “Orders”.
Once my accounts are linked, will I be able to access all my account documents, ie statements, under one User ID?
Yes, you can. From your main Motif dashboard scroll over “Account” and click on “Documents & Confirms”. From this page use the dropdown to select which account you would like to access for the needed documents.
No. Your profile is shown at the login level, which means it is representative of all your accounts under your Login ID.
From your Motif dashboard scroll over “Monitor” tab at the top of the page and select “Trading Alerts”.
Trading Alerts can be set up to notify you via email and text message. Once a Trading Alert reaches the trigger value, you will be notified via the methods you selected.
After you are notified, the alert will be turned off. You can turn it back on and/or change the trigger value at any point from the Trading Alerts page or your Positions page.
The most common reasons for why Trading Alerts turn off are:
- Your alert was triggered and the notification was sent. Confirm the trigger value and how you chose to be notified.
- A corporate action on one of the underlying motif securities took place. Once the corporate action is processed you will be able to re-enable your alert. Corporate actions take about 2-3 days to process.
- There was a trade on one of your positions that is tracked by a Trading Alert. You can re-enable your Trading Alert at any point from the Trading Alerts page or positions page.

Whenever you buy or sell more of a position that has a Trading Alert associated, the Trading Alert will turn off. You can turn it back on from the Trading Alerts page.
If you want to execute a trade, yes. Trading Alerts are a notification only and will not take action on your account. After you are notified that your alert has triggered, you would need to log in to your account and take action if you want to execute a trade.
Yes. We offer Individual, Joint Tenant, Roth IRA, Traditional IRA and Rollover IRA’s.
No, you can open additional accounts at different times and still have them linked. To open another account, from your Motif dashboard scroll over your name at the top of the page and select “Settings” from the drop-down.
Absolutely! With our new linked accounts feature you can now set up numerous accounts under one profile. For more information about linked accounts view the FAQ “Am I able to view all of my accounts at one time?”
Absolutely. As long as the social security number matches on both accounts, you will need to call our Customer Service team at 1-855-586-6843 M-F 9am-6pm ET. They will be able to quickly link your accounts over the phone.
For my existing accounts that I had prior to this feature, how do I link my accounts if the social security numbers do not match?
You will need to call our Customer Service team so they can assist. They will require you to fill out a Full Trading Authorization which must be notarized form. They are available M-F 9am-6pm ET and can be reached at 1-855-586-6843.

An investing circle is your customizable, private group of investors that you trust. It’s a group of friends you feel most comfortable sharing your investing ideas and activity with, and those who have investing ideas and opinions you’re most interested in. Make your investing circle as large – or as intimate – as you want. You can add and remove any friend from your investing circle at any time. And, if you simply want to interact with all your friends at Motif and choose the same privacy settings for all of them, you don’t have to create an investing circle at all.
Your friends are a larger group, while your investing circle is more exclusive, with privacy settings that allow them to see more on your profile. Your investing circle is a sub-set of friends you feel most comfortable sharing your investing ideas and activity with, along with those whose investing ideas and opinions you’re most interested in. To create your investing circle, you’ll first send your friends an invitation. When each friend accepts, you can decide if you want to include them in your investing circle.
Your Motif home page is your daily report of data and information from the Motif Social Network that you may want to know about.
Buy vs. Sell – This compares the Buy and Sell orders of the day.
Bull vs. Bear – This compares the bullish and bearish stances Motif investors are taking in their comments on motifs. It can you help understand the overall investing sentiments of the day.
It’s easy! Just choose which Facebook friends you’d like to include, and they’ll receive a post on their Facebook wall inviting them to accept your friend request. You can also send requests to other investors who are part of the Motif Social Network. Soon, you’ll be able to invite friends via email. Once your friends accept your friend requests, you can decide which friends to include in your investing circle.
